EU Regulator Warns That Stretched AI Valuations Raise the Risk of an Abrupt Correction
ESMA's latest risk report says the gap between upbeat valuations and a weakening economy keeps growing, with money still pouring into AI funds. Three weeks later, AI infrastructure stocks had their worst day in months.
In its second risk report of 2026, published in September, the European Securities and Markets Authority (ESMA) said stretched technology valuations and geopolitical tensions were increasing vulnerabilities in EU markets, even though markets had remained resilient. It noted that investment in AI funds, especially those focused on AI infrastructure, continues to grow.
"Investor optimism continues to support elevated valuations despite rising geopolitical tensions," said ESMA's chair, Verena Ross, according to Cyprus Mail. "The wider this gap becomes, the greater the risk of an abrupt market correction." She added that retail and institutional investors "should remain vigilant and retain resilience."
The report also linked AI to risks beyond prices. ESMA said frontier AI is changing the operational risk landscape and making cyber risk more important for market infrastructure, and that retail investors face risks from social-media content and the gamification of trading apps.
A regulator's warning is not a forecast, and valuations can stay high for a long time. But on October 14 the market offered a reminder of how quickly sentiment can turn. After a hotter-than-expected US inflation report, CoreWeave, which rents out AI computing capacity, fell 15.46%, its worst day since February; Nebius dropped 10.08% and Oracle 8.83%. The VanEck Semiconductor ETF fell for a seventh straight session, down 10.9% from its October 5 close.
The common thread with ESMA's report is the financing. Companies that borrow heavily to build AI capacity are the most exposed when interest rates rise or lenders become more cautious — which is why, on October 14, they fell three to five times as much as Nvidia, the chipmaker that supplies them.
