China Q3 GDP, September Retail Sales and Industrial Output

Oct 19, 2026, 10:00 a.m. Beijing (2:00 a.m. ET)

The National Bureau of Statistics' quarterly growth figure with the September activity data. China is the largest buyer of the chips and commodities that moved markets in October, so the report is read for export strength, domestic demand and the odds of stimulus.

Previous: GDP 4.3% y/y (Q2) · retail sales 0.4% y/y · industrial output 5.2% y/y (August)

Expected: GDP 4.4% y/y (Reuters poll) · retail sales 0.5% · industrial output 5.4%

Actual: GDP 4.5% y/y, 1.2% q/q · retail sales 1.1% · industrial output 5.5% · unemployment 5.2%

Growth beat on every line. GDP rose 4.5% from a year earlier against 4.4% expected and 4.3% in the second quarter, and 1.2% on the quarter against 1.1%. September retail sales grew 1.1%, the fastest since March, and industrial output 5.5%. The weakness was in investment: fixed-asset investment fell 7.2% in the first nine months, property investment 20.6% and infrastructure 4.2%.

Markets read a beat built on chip and electronics exports as a reason to expect less stimulus. The Shanghai Composite rose 0.2%, the Australian and New Zealand dollars firmed, and Hong Kong was closed for the Chung Yeung Festival. The report arrived as the Kospi reversed a 3% opening loss and Nasdaq futures rose 1.3%.
