Housing Starts

The number of new privately owned housing units on which construction began in a month, published by the US Census Bureau as a seasonally adjusted annual rate alongside building permits and completions. Single-family starts are the most mortgage-rate-sensitive part; permits lead starts by one to three months. The monthly change carries a wide confidence interval, so economists read the trend and the year-on-year comparison.
