What Does HODL Mean?
A crypto community meme that turned into shorthand for a genuine investing philosophy: holding through volatility instead of trading in and out of it.
HODL is crypto slang for holding an asset through volatility rather than actively trading in and out of it, typically over a long time horizon. It originated from a misspelling of "hold" in an old forum post and stuck as community shorthand, eventually getting reinterpreted by some as a backronym for "hold on for dear life."
As a strategy, HODL is essentially a long-term buy-and-hold approach applied to a historically volatile asset class. The reasoning behind it is that trying to time short-term crypto swings is difficult even for experienced traders, and repeatedly trading in and out can rack up worse results than simply holding through the volatility toward a longer-term thesis.
It's not a strategy for every situation, though — HODLing through a genuine, sustained downtrend with no underlying thesis for recovery is different from HODLing a position you've deliberately chosen to hold long-term. The term describes a behavior, not a guarantee of the right call.
If your interest is in the shorter-term price swings themselves rather than a long hold, Trade2Spike's Fast Binary and Spot Trading modes are built for exactly that — engaging directly with short-term volatility instead of sitting through it.
