What Is Trading Volume, and Why Does It Matter?
The same price move can mean very different things depending on how much volume came with it.
Trading volume is the total amount of an asset traded over a given period — how many shares, coins, or contracts changed hands, not how much the price moved. It's a measure of activity and participation, separate from price direction entirely.
Volume is most useful as a way to gauge conviction behind a price move. A price rising on high volume suggests broad participation and stronger conviction behind the move; the same price rise on unusually low volume suggests fewer participants are actually involved, which can make the move more fragile and more likely to reverse.
Volume also tends to spike around major news events, earnings releases, or economic data — moments when many participants are reacting to the same new information simultaneously, as opposed to the comparatively quiet periods between them.
Comparing how volume behaves around real news events for the crypto and stocks available on Trade2Spike is a useful habit to build, since it's the same underlying signal professional traders use to judge whether a move is broadly supported or thin.
