Apple's First Foldable Phone Arrived With a New CEO Already in the Chair

Apple unveiled its first foldable iPhone at $1,999 — the first major product reveal under an already-installed new CEO, with Tim Cook stepping back to an oversight role.

Apple unveiled its first foldable phone alongside new Pro models featuring a 2nm chip and upgraded Siri — the first major product reveal under incoming CEO John Ternus, who took over on September 1 as Tim Cook moved to Executive Chairman.

The stock had already rallied 14% since Apple raised prices across much of its lineup in late June, with much of that move attributed to anticipation of the foldable launch specifically. Even so, shares remain roughly 8% below the all-time high set in late July — the reveal closed a gap rather than setting a new record outright.

The numbers behind the announcement are sizable: one bank estimates the foldable could add roughly $14 billion in December-quarter revenue alone, and going back to 2007, Apple stock has risen in the 60 days following an iPhone reveal 17 separate times. Past pattern isn't a guarantee, especially with a new CEO's first major product cycle facing extra scrutiny from a market looking for signs of continuity or change.

A leadership transition landing on top of a genuine hardware catalyst is a layered story that plays out over weeks as sales data and reviews arrive — a better match for Long Term's 48-hour, stop-loss-protected format than a single-day reaction to the keynote itself.
