LayerZero and Arbitrum Rallied Into Their Own Token Unlocks
Arbitrum rose 7.6% on October 15 and kept climbing on the day 92.65 million ARB tokens were released. LayerZero gained 10.3% and another 6.6% by Friday midday, four days before about 25.7 million ZRO, roughly 6.4% of supply, unlock.
The textbook says a token should weaken before a large unlock, as holders sell ahead of new supply. This week two of the biggest scheduled unlocks did the opposite. Arbitrum (ARB) rose 7.59% on October 15 to $0.1957 and added another 2.7% to about $0.201 by 11:00 UTC on Friday — the day 92.65 million tokens, about 1.56% of supply worth roughly $18.5 million, were due to be released to the team, advisers and the DAO treasury, according to Tokenomist. It was ARB's highest price since October 5.
LayerZero's move was larger. ZRO climbed 10.25% on Thursday to $2.086, most of it in two afternoon hours: from $1.82 at 14:00 UTC to $2.13 by 16:00, on more than $5.7 million of volume. It kept going overnight and traded at $2.224 at midday on Friday, a two-day gain of about 17.5% and its highest since October 6. Its unlock, about 25.7 million ZRO or roughly 6.4% of circulating supply, worth about $56.6 million, is scheduled for October 20 and goes to core contributors and strategic partners.
Neither rally came on unusual volume — both tokens traded close to their 20-day averages on Thursday — and both happened on a day the wider altcoin market rose. That matters: when a whole sector rallies, an upcoming unlock rarely stops one of its members from joining in. Celestia, Worldcoin and Aptos also posted double-digit gains between Thursday and Friday morning.
Unlocks are known in advance, which is exactly why their effect is hard to trade. Some recipients sell; many do not, or hedge beforehand. The more reliable pattern is around the event itself: the larger the share of supply released relative to daily trading volume, the more the day after can weigh. ZRO's unlock is worth roughly three days of its recent spot volume on Binance.
This weekend also brings Cronos's largest monthly release, about 1.17 billion CRO worth some $68.6 million on October 17, and deBridge's, more than 10% of its circulating supply. The scheduled unlocks for the next two weeks are on our IPO and unlocks calendar.
