Gold on CPI Day: The Hour Rate-Hike Bets Jumped (October 2026)

On October 14, 2026, a hotter-than-expected US inflation report pushed gold-backed PAX Gold from about $4,146 to $4,099 in an hour. Replay the release in 15-minute candles and see how the rest of the day unfolded.

PAX Gold (PAXG) is a token backed by physical gold, so its price follows the gold market closely and it trades around the clock on Binance. That makes it a useful way to watch how gold reacts to US data.

On the morning of October 14, 2026, PAXG traded in a narrow band between about $4,141 and $4,171. At 12:30 UTC the US Consumer Price Index for September came out hotter than expected: 3.7% a year against 3.6% forecast, and core inflation 0.3% in the month against 0.2%. Markets raised the chance of a Fed rate hike at the October 28 meeting to about 50% from 20%.

In the hour that included the release, PAXG fell to $4,099.51 on about $5.5 million of volume, around 14 times the hour before. It drifted down to $4,087.09 in the US afternoon and ended the day at $4,123, down 0.89%. Silver fell much harder: the iShares Silver Trust lost 6.11%.

Gold pays no interest, so expectations of higher rates make it less attractive than bonds or cash. In the replay, notice how the release-hour drop is followed by a slower grind lower rather than a quick rebound.
