UVXY's Fear Spike: +26%, Then a Fade (October 2026)
UVXYB, the token tracking a 1.5x VIX futures fund, rose 26% from $16.82 to $21.20 between Thursday's close and Friday afternoon on October 29–30, 2026, as the VIX touched 23.93. It gave back almost half of the gain in the last two hours. Replay how a volatility product prices fear.
UVXYB tracks UVXY, an exchange-traded fund that aims to deliver one and a half times the daily move of an index of short-term VIX futures. It is a bet on fear: when stocks fall sharply, investors pay more for options protection, the VIX rises, and VIX futures follow. On Thursday, October 29, there was little of it. The VIX closed at 17.20 after a day between 16.21 and 17.36, and the token ended the 19:00 UTC hour, the last before the US close, at $16.82.
The first move came with the earnings after the close. Intel's weak forecast and Amazon's spending plans hit index futures, and the token's 20:00 hour rose 3.69% to $17.42. Overnight it kept climbing in small steps, to $17.77 by midnight and $18.13 in the 01:00 UTC hour, and then went quiet through the European morning, holding around $18.00. Volatility products trade thinly when the US market is closed, and most quarter-hours changed hands for a few hundred to a few thousand dollars.
The US session did the rest. The token rose 0.88% in the opening quarter-hour at 13:30 UTC, and 2.79% to $18.77 in the 14:00 quarter-hour as the Nasdaq fell more than 2%. From 16:45 UTC it rose almost every quarter-hour: $19.65, $19.86 by 17:15, $20.21 by 17:45, and $21.01 at 18:15 after a 2.29% candle, with a peak of $21.20 in the 18:30 quarter-hour, 26% above Thursday's close. The VIX itself touched 23.93 during the day, 39% above its previous close.
Then the fear faded faster than it arrived. From 18:30 UTC the token fell in six of the next seven quarter-hours, and the 19:45 candle, the last before the close, dropped 1.92% to $19.40 on $38,614, the largest volume of the replay, as traders who had bought protection sold it. The VIX closed at 19.42, up 12.9%, far below its high, and the token ended the replay at $19.02, 13% above Thursday's close but more than 10% below its peak. Volatility spikes rarely hold: options sellers return as soon as prices stop falling, and funds like UVXY lose value over time as they roll from cheaper to more expensive futures, which is why they are built for days, not months.
