Zcash Rose From $1,137 to $1,296 After Developers Set the NU7 Activation Height, Starting With a $23 Million Candle (October 2026)

ZEC was $1,137 at 13:00 UTC on October 20, 2026, in the middle of a week-long range. The 14:00 candle rose from $1,183 to $1,231 on $23.6 million and 44,460 trades, four times any quarter-hour that morning, after the Zcash developers published the mainnet activation height for NU7, the upgrade that cuts the block time from 75 to 25 seconds. The 15:00 candle gave back 2.6%, the evening rebuilt the move, the 21:00 hour printed $1,280, and the 00:45 candle on October 21 reached the high of $1,296.45, up 14%, before settling near $1,260. Replay a large-cap privacy coin trading a scheduled upgrade on $196 million of daily volume.

Zcash in October 2026 is a different market from the thin tokens in the other replays: a privacy coin above $1,100 with $150 to $200 million of Binance spot volume a day, a listed futures market and a news flow of its own. It had rallied from $1,049 on Sunday evening, October 18, to $1,191.76 in the 02:00 UTC hour on Monday on $29.9 million of hourly volume, then spent a day and a half giving the move back, with a low of $1,110.79 in the 14:00 hour on Monday and a Tuesday morning between $1,123 and $1,157 on $2 to $7 million an hour.

The catalyst arrived in the European afternoon. The Zcash developers set the mainnet activation height for NU7, the block number at which every node switches to new rules that cut the block time from 75 to 25 seconds and route 60% of transaction fees into a reserve paid out over time; the upgrade had been on the test network since early October. The 13:00 hour was the first sign, from $1,151 to $1,183 on $9.2 million, and the 14:00 candle was the event: open $1,183.26, high $1,234.52, close $1,230.84, on $23.6 million and 44,460 trades, with the 14:00 hour as a whole trading $43 million and 93,933 trades, the busiest hour in a week. The 14:15 candle closed lower at $1,216 on $9.6 million and the 15:00 candle dropped 2.6% to $1,191 on $5.7 million, the standard first rejection after a news candle.

What makes the replay instructive is that the rejection failed. The 16:00 hour recovered to $1,209, the 17:00 hour to $1,222.80, and after a dip to $1,190 in the 19:00 hour the 20:00 hour rose 2.8% to $1,243 on $11.3 million and the 21:00 hour printed $1,280 on $11.1 million, 12.6% above the 13:00 price, as US equities closed and SpaceX's report lifted risk assets after hours. The 22:00 and 23:00 hours held $1,251 to $1,277. Then the 00:45 UTC candle on October 21 printed the high, $1,296.45, on $6.6 million and 17,322 trades, and closed at $1,279; the 01:00 candle fell to $1,261.75. The Asian morning drifted: $1,281 in the 02:00 hour, $1,257 in the 03:00 hour, $1,261 at 05:00, 11% above the pre-announcement price with the daily volume at $196 million, in line with the week.

Two things to compare with the smaller tokens. The news candle here was 4% of the price, not 15%, because a $23 million candle in a $200-million-a-day market is a large order, not a regime change; and the first rejection was bought, because the holders of a coin this size include funds that trade the upgrade calendar rather than the tape. The high came ten hours after the news, overnight, on a fraction of the news candle's volume, which is the shape of a market that has finished re-pricing and is waiting for the activation block itself.
