Brent Into a Weekend of Claimed Strikes, Ether Below $2,300 for an Hour, and the Real on Election Day
Three theoretical setups for the Sunday before the Fed: Brent, which settled at $116.72 on Friday and reopens after the Houthis claimed strikes on the Rabigh refinery and the East-West Pipeline; ether, which touched $2,282.46 on Saturday afternoon, its lowest since at least September, after a week of ETF outflows and a delayed upgrade; and the Brazilian real, which firmed 1.8% on Friday and now waits for a runoff the polls call a tie.
BRENT · Brent Crude Oil — Bullish, Short-term (days). December Brent settled at $116.72 on October 23, its highest close since April, and the January contract, which becomes the benchmark as December expires on October 30 and is the price this setup is measured on, settled at $111.70, up 2.8% on the day. The $5.02 gap between the two months is itself the signal: buyers are paying far more for barrels delivered now than for barrels a month later, the shape of a market pricing a near-term supply risk. The weekend added to that risk rather than removing it. On Saturday the Houthis said they had attacked eight Saudi targets, including the Rabigh refinery, crude pumping stations, the East-West Pipeline that carries Saudi crude to the Red Sea, and Riyadh's main airport, and the Saudi-led coalition said it destroyed two ballistic missiles fired towards Yanbu and Taif. No damage to oil facilities had been confirmed by Sunday morning, which is the uncertainty futures will price when they reopen on Sunday evening. The setup is a continuation into the week while the headlines arrive faster than evidence that exports are unaffected. The risks are the ones that have cut several dollars from crude in a session this month: a mediation or ceasefire report, or a Fed on Wednesday hawkish enough to hit demand expectations. A daily close below $108.66 on the January contract, its October 22 settle before Friday's breakout, would invalidate the setup.
ETH/USD · Ether — Bearish, Short-term (days). Ether fell from about $2,726 on October 5 to $2,387.60 at the close of October 23, a loss of about 12% against about 6% for bitcoin, and on Saturday, October 24, it dropped 3.6% in 75 minutes to $2,282.46 on Binance, its lowest price since at least the start of September, on 21 times the previous hour's volume. The flows point the same way as the chart: US spot ether ETFs had net outflows of about $220.7 million in the week to October 23 while bitcoin funds took in about $301.2 million, according to Farside data, and on October 22 Ethereum's developers pulled the Glamsterdam upgrade from its October 26 Hoodi testnet date after ChainSecurity flagged a gas-pricing risk, with no new date set. The Saturday low was retested at $2,294.84 and held, and the token recovered to $2,358.82 by midnight on falling volume, which looks like a bounce rather than a reversal. The setup is a second test of the $2,280 to $2,300 area into the Fed decision and Coinbase's report on Thursday. A daily close above $2,482.49, the October 22 high and the top of last week's range, would invalidate the setup.
USD/BRL · US Dollar / Brazilian Real — Neutral, Short-term (days). Brazil votes on Sunday, October 25, in a runoff between Flávio Bolsonaro, who led the first round with 47.03%, and President Lula, with 45.16%; the final Datafolha and Quaest polls put it at 51% to 49% for Bolsonaro among valid votes, within the margin of error. The currency has already shown how much one result can be worth: on October 5, after the first round, the real gained about 4% and the Ibovespa 7.7% in a session. On Friday the real firmed 1.8% on Binance's USDT/BRL pair, from 5.063 to a low of 4.9739, then gave some back into the weekend to about 5.01. A close race and a market that has priced part of one outcome make for an asymmetric reaction but not a predictable one, and the first prints on Monday will come before most traders can act. The levels frame it: a daily close below 4.97, Friday's low, would say the market is extending the October 5 trade; a close above 5.07, the top of last week's range, would say it is unwinding it. Until the count is in, the honest position is none.
