Alphabet's Gap, Oracle's Reset and Bitcoin's Lower Highs
Three theoretical setups after Fed day and the big-tech reports: Alphabet, down about 9% after hours on negative free cash flow; Oracle, up 10.7% after capping its outside funding; and bitcoin, whose daily highs have stepped down for a week and which slipped back toward $80,000 as Asian markets sold AI stocks.
GOOGL · Alphabet Inc. (Class A) — Neutral, Short-term (days). Alphabet closed at $324.89 on October 28 and traded at $294.20 at 4:41 p.m. in New York, 9.4% lower, after its third-quarter report; Binance's tokenised version of the stock touched $287.85 in the evening before settling near $293. The report cut both ways. Google Cloud revenue rose 103% to $30.71 billion and total revenue 25% to $127.58 billion, but capital spending of $51.36 billion left free cash flow at minus $9.07 billion, Search revenue growth slowed to 12% from 17%, and diluted earnings of $2.12 a share were far below forecasts after an $8.66 billion loss on equity holdings. A gap of this size on a result that mixes accelerating growth with a cash shortfall tends to be followed by a few sessions of wide two-way trading while analysts revise targets, rather than a clean trend. The levels define the next move rather than a view: a daily close below $287.85, the after-hours low, would mean the regular session confirmed and extended the overnight selling; a close back above $324.89, Wednesday's close, would say the market has decided the spending is worth it and the gap has been absorbed.
ORCL · Oracle Corporation — Bullish, Short-term (days). Oracle rose 10.73% to $144.54 on October 28, its largest one-day gain since May, on volume of about 80 million shares, roughly 2.6 times its three-month average. The move came in a single burst after its investor day, where the company capped new outside funding at $20 billion through fiscal 2030, said capital spending should peak in fiscal 2027 and 2028, and put positive free cash flow in the second half of fiscal 2028 and at least $30 billion in fiscal 2029. The stock had fallen about 50% in twelve months on exactly that worry, debt and dilution, so a cap addresses the main reason it was sold rather than adding a new promise. Heavy volume on a gap that holds most of its gain into the close usually marks a change in positioning that takes more than one day to complete. The risk came the same evening: when Alphabet fell after hours, the tokenised Oracle stock slipped to $138.88 before recovering to about $141, a reminder that the AI trade can drag it back in a sector-wide sell-off. The setup is a hold above the middle of Wednesday's range and a retest of the $148.48 high. A daily close below $138.43, the midpoint of the October 28 range, would invalidate the setup.
BTC/USD · Bitcoin — Bearish, Short-term (days). Bitcoin's daily highs on Binance have stepped down from $84,898 on October 21 to $82,061, $81,214, $81,034 and $80,845 by October 26, and the two rebounds since, to $81,300 and $81,823, stopped well short of that sequence's start. Daily closes have been stuck between $80,150 and $81,343 for six sessions, and early on Thursday, October 29, the price slipped back to about $80,100, with a low of $79,710, as Asian markets sold AI-related stocks after Alphabet's report and Korea's Kospi fell about 3%. The Fed's hold did little to help: two officials voted for a hike, the 10-year Treasury yield ended just above 5%, and futures still price a December increase as likely, which keeps real yields high against an asset that pays nothing. Activity is also thin: Robinhood's third-quarter crypto revenue fell 55% from a year earlier, a sign that retail trading has not returned. The setup is a test of the October 24 low of $79,221, with Coinbase and Strategy reporting after the US close on Thursday as the next catalysts. The risks are a broad relief rally if Amazon's results calm the AI trade, or a softer reading of September PCE inflation on Thursday morning. A daily close above $81,823, the October 28 high, would break the pattern of lower highs and invalidate the setup.
