Oil Near Its High, S&P 500 Below Support, Bitcoin Waits

Three theoretical setups for the week of Apple's results, the midterms and the jobs report: the oil fund USO a whisker from its six-month closing high, the S&P 500 fund SPY after a close below support and its 100-day average, and bitcoin in a 1% range as Binance reopens withdrawals.

USO · United States Oil Fund — Bullish, Short-term (days). USO closed Friday, October 30, at $168.83, up 12.5% from $150.02 on October 1 and only 0.4% below its highest close in six months, $169.53 on October 23, after touching $171.82 during the session. Brent's expiring December contract settled at $117.64, its highest since April, and US crude rose 2.08% to $104.12 as traders prepared for an escalation in the war with Iran. The trend is orderly rather than parabolic: the fund sits above a rising 20-day average near $157.62 and a 50-day average near $150.09, and the October 27 pullback held at $162.69 before buyers returned. OPEC+ was set to keep December targets unchanged on Sunday, which removes the risk of a surprise supply increase, and most members are pumping below their quotas anyway. The risks are a ceasefire headline, which would remove part of the war premium overnight, and the steep backwardation between the expired December and the January contract, which USO now holds. A daily close below $162.69, the October 27 low, would invalidate the setup.

SPY · SPDR S&P 500 ETF Trust — Bearish, Short-term (days). SPY fell 1.77% on October 30 to $755.72, its lowest close since September 16, opening with a gap at $761.38 after Intel's 28.6% collapse and closing near the low of a $750.36 to $761.46 range on 77.6 million shares, about twice its recent daily volume. The close took the fund below its 100-day average near $759.22 and further below its 50-day average near $767.49, and StoneX noted that the index had broken support between 7,620 and 7,632, the area where buyers had stepped in on October 23. The weakness is concentrated in the largest technology names, which carry the most weight in the index, and the week ahead brings Apple's results on Monday, the midterm elections on Tuesday and the October payrolls report on Friday, with a consensus of 55,000 jobs. The risks are the strong seasonal record of November in midterm years and a short-covering rally if Apple reassures. A daily close above $761.46, Friday's high, would invalidate the setup.

BTC · Bitcoin — Neutral, Short-term (days). Bitcoin spent Saturday, October 31, between $77,114.01 and $77,796.01 on Binance, a range of less than 1%, and closed at $77,582.02, sealing a 7.22% loss for October, its first monthly decline after gains of 24.95% in August and 6.42% in September. The calm has a clear cause: Binance, where withdrawals have been frozen since the October 29 hack, began a phased restart between 06:00 and 09:00 GMT on Sunday after saying it had covered about 95% of the $6.3 billion stolen, and the FBI attributed the theft to North Korea's TraderTraitor unit. Bitcoin rose to $78,055 in the first hour of the window. Two outcomes are possible from here: a smooth reopening and a clean proof of reserves, promised for Monday, would remove the overhang that has kept buyers away, while heavy outflows from the exchange or a thin reserve report would revive it. The levels define the next move rather than a view: a daily close above $78,804.01, the October 30 high, would point to a recovery toward the pre-hack range, while a close below $76,325.98, the post-hack low, would open a new leg down.
